Banjo Player Alycia Sandmeier Visits LindenFifth graders at Linden Street School recently enjoyed a performance by visiting musician / banjo player, Alycia Sandmeier. Sandmeier was joined by guitar player and Linden music teacher, Marilyn Speranza. The musical duo introduced students to the banjo to prepare them for an upcoming cardboard-box banjo building project. During the presentation, students heard classic bluegrass tunes and learned about banjo history. Fifth-grade students at Linden have built cardboard box banjos for the past several years. The project connects the fifth-grade science curriculum to music, with a focus on how sound is made and perceived. Students use their completed cardboard-box banjos to play tunes that they have learned in music class. Sandmeier's performance served as the perfect kick-off for the cardboard box banjo project, sparking student interest in the instrument.
